Painting with Light brings technology to historical QUAKE Experience

Painting with Light, a lighting and multimedia expert, recently created and implemented a range of technologies to bring a new Lisbon attraction to life.

The firm worked on cutting-edge projection mapping, imaginative lighting design, and other AV systems to help make the QUAKE Experience a reality in the Portuguese capital.

The 90-minute walk-through experience takes place in the QUAKE Lisbon Earthquake Center, a new facility in the Belém neighbourhood. Visitors can enjoy a spectacle with a variety of immersive experiences during eleven timed and show-controlled scenarios.

One-of-a-kind recreation

Jora Vision conceived the concept for this one-of-a-kind exhibition, which is both instructive and amusing and revolves around the 1755 earthquake, which destroyed much of the city and altered its whole history. In an hour and a half, guests are taught about the scientific underpinning of earthquakes by ‘Professor Luis,’ and then transported back to 1755 via the ‘Time Machine.’ There, visitors may feel what an earthquake is like and see how the resulting wave destroyed Lisbon.

From the initial concept to the final realisation, the PWL team was in charge of all technical developments for this museum experience. The artistic and technical professionals collaborated closely to develop light schemes and projector calculations. PWL also included audio and special effects, as well as show control to handle visitor flows efficiently. A dedicated audiovisual performance takes place in each space, merging AV technologies into a one-of-a-kind experience.

Bringing history alive

The QUAKE Experience tells the tragic narrative of the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon and forever transformed the city. Rich details and historical reconstruction were used to bring the tragic event to life.

Painting with Light CEO Luc Peumans says: “Light and sound are crucial elements for an immersive experience, giving visitors the opportunity to revive the moments in the streets of Lisbon in the most realistic and dramatic way possible. This approach beats displays with static texts and explanations, making the entire experience far more memorable and impressive.”

The production team followed all historical and scientific principles to ensure that the project is educationally relevant and to raise the level of experience with the expertise of local academic experts.

The Painting with Light team seamlessly integrated all light and AV technologies to enhance the experience and fully immerse guests in the story and environment. It was critical to strike the correct balance in the design between the topic’s seriousness and entertainment.

Peumans adds: “We very much enjoyed the cooperation with Jora Vision, who designed and coordinated the overall project, to bring this exciting story to life in ways that break the traditional barrier. The result is a spectacular experience combining the most innovative light, projection & AV technologies across a beautiful themed environment. Visitors are not just spectators but feel part of the story, making it more memorable and engaging.”

QUAKE Lisbon Earthquake Center opened its doors in April 2022. More information and tickets can be found on the attraction’s website.
